Video Spotlight: Julian Smith

Julian Smith is a filmmaker who makes skits and funny songs, and I think he is one of the best at what he does.

First off, he’s the best actor I’ve seen on Youtube. In addition to playing a fictionalized version of himself, he also plays such wildly different characters as Jeffrey Dallas and Mr. Timn, and he does so very well. If you watch the above sketch, “Moving Out,” you might never guess that Julian is playing both the “normal” straight man on the right, and Jeffrey Dallas on the left. They look and sound completely different, and pulling that off is no mean feat. Props also go to frequent co-star Donnivan Jordan, who is almost as good.

Second, the production values and film quality seen in his videos are second to none. They are always high quality, well lit, and make use of different camera angles and other cinematography tricks. As a filmmaker, he obviously knows what he’s doing. That’s something I can appreciate, and it makes his videos seem very well-polished and professional.

Lastly, and most importantly, He’s gut-bustlingly funny. He always brings a smile to my face, his videos are endlessly rewatchable, and his sense of humor is variable enough that it doesn’t feel like he’s using the same schtick over and over again. The only downside is that for the last two years or so, his rate of production has slowed to a crawl. I’m not sure why isn’t producing videos very often anymore, but I hope he comes back in full swing someday.

In addition to his main channel, juliansmith87, he also has a channel just for his character Jeffery Dallas, called jefferydallas, though most of the videos on it have been moved back to his primary channel. He also has his own website,
